Using ISP Mail

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) often provide free email accounts with broadband services. Using free email might seem like a good idea at the time and while this may be fine for some, there are some potential pitfalls to be aware of!

Sometimes we decide to change ISPs, this can be due to poor service, finding a more competitive deal elsewhere or simply because the ISP does not offer a service in your new area.

So now have you considered what would happen to your free email accounts once the old broadband service is disconnected? Some ISPs may cancel the email accounts or ask for a monthly fee to keep them active. Other ISPs may keep the email service going although with no broadband revenue it’s hard to know what incentive they have to provide this service.

EE Close down email accounts

In 2016, EE announced that they were discontinuing Orange, Freeserve and Wanadoo email addresses and in 2017 to the dismay of thousands of present and ex EE customers they eventually closed these accounts down.

Best Course of Action

In short, consider using an independent email account that doesn’t lock you in to a particular service. Consider an email service such as Gmail or Outlook.com which are both feature rich, easy to configure, very reliable and best of all – free! For business use, consider a business email service which not only gives you the freedom to switch providers as often as you wish but is more professional and easier on the eye (i.e. joe.bloggs@mybusiness.co.uk is better than joe.bloggs@gmail.com).
