Laptop overheating

You might be wondering why your laptop is gradually running hotter and louder recently… The most common reason is simple, dust build up! Over the years, a gradual build up of dust can form an almost carpet like layer between the laptop’s heatsink and fan. The fan then has to work harder (and louder!) to cool the laptop. Over time this can cause heat damage inside the laptop and eventually lead to component damage.

Keeping the laptop on a hard surface and in a relatively dust free environment often helps slow down the dust built up. If your laptop is already exhibiting overheating symptoms though, spraying the cooling fan vent (usually on side or base of the laptop) with compressed air can help. When the build up is just too tough to shift, it could be time for a laptop service. Some cooling fans are relatively easy to access while others can be on the reverse side of the motherboard and require a full disassembly. It’s also a good idea to re-apply CPU thermal compound after removing the fan assembly as the old compound often dries up and crumbles off.
